Community Literacy Centers

Community Literacy Centers, Inc. (CLC) is pleased to work with Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 5 to offer classes for members.  Our classes are always free to our adult students!

The following classes meet 1-2 times every week. We have morning, afternoon, and evening classes.

• English as a Second Language: Improve your English reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
• U.S. Citizenship: Learn civics and history while you prepare for the U.S. Citizenship process.
• Adult Basic Education: Improve your reading, writing, and math.
• High School Equivalency: Prepare to take the HiSET exam to earn your high school diploma.

There are four ways to enroll:

3. Ask for assistance at the BAC office.

US Bates Scholarship

The BAC annually awards three scholarships to students whose parents or stepparents are US BAC members. The stipends are $5,000 per year for up to four years – up to $20,000 total.

Apprenticeship 

B.A.C Apprenticeship & Training Programs provide training for union members. The programs are registered with the U.S. Department of Labor governed by a Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (J.A.T.C.) made up of both Labor and Management. Local, Regional, and National Training Centers are available to serve the needs of our members and signatory contractors.

Local 5 provides training for the following crafts: 

Bricklayer

Bricklaying is the oldest and most highly respected of the construction trades. A bricklayer is a skilled craftperson who, using their talents and training, can properly position masonry units of all types such as, brick, block, stone, granite, glass block, and precast materials to create efficient, beautiful buildings and other structures.

Refractory Workers

Refractory work requires the bricklayer to install a variety of fire brick. Training is also provided to apply gunite to various refractory materials of all types of manufacturing and refining facilities. For more information on Refractory Work, click here.

Pointer, Caulker, Cleaner (PCC)

PCC is probably the most diversified trade in the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union. A Pointer or Tuckpointer removes and replaces mortar between masonry units. The Cleaner aspect is the cleaning of all masonry surfaces. A Caulker applies sealants to expansion joints in new and old buildings.

Tile, Marble, and Terrazzo

Tile, marble, and terrazzo add great beauty and permanence to construction projects where they are used. To combine such skilled craftwork and artistry requires specialized training. The recently updated Tile curriculum is the result of months of study and research, providing a training course for this craft.

Pre-Job Training Boot Camp

Consists of twelve continuous weeks of practical training and exercise with the intent of exposing potential apprenticeship candidates to the basics of the trade.
